CVESD Honored for Biliteracy Leadership at SDCOE Biliteracy Symposium

The Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) was recognized at the annual Leadership Biliteracy Symposium, hosted by the San Diego County Office of Education. The event celebrates individuals and organizations that have made meaningful contributions to advancing biliteracy and supporting multilingual learners across the region.

CVESD received special recognition as a past community honoree for its outstanding commitment to biliteracy. The district’s ongoing efforts to promote bilingualism, biliteracy, and academic success for all students continue to serve as a model throughout the county.

Two CVESD educators were also honored for their leadership and impact in the field of biliteracy. Congratulations to Olga Lozada and Blanca Torres.

Ms. Lozada, an English learner instructional assistant serving Anne & William Hedenkamp and Valle Lindo Elementary Schools, was recognized for her more than 20 years of dedicated service to Multilingual English Learners. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated compassion, expertise, and professionalism in every aspect of her role. Ms. Lozada is highly skilled in supporting students and families, managing records, coordinating schedules, and administering language assessments. She is also a valued team member who uplifts her colleagues by sharing her knowledge and strengthening the EL-IA community. Her genuine care for students is evident in the meaningful, supportive learning environments she creates each day.

Ms. Torres, a second-grade dual language immersion teacher at Saburo Muraoka Elementary School, was honored for her excellence in promoting bilingualism, biliteracy, and socio-cultural competence. Through intentional and engaging instruction, she ensures that rigorous academic content is accessible to all learners. Ms. Torres is especially skilled at helping students make connections between languages and build strong metalinguistic awareness. In addition to her classroom impact, she serves as a CVESD bilingual resource teacher Lead, supporting fellow educators with professional learning and instructional resources. A dedicated lifelong learner, she continuously refines her practice and serves as a mentor and inspiration to her peers.
